There's sad story behind this feature, the clients commissioned a well known award winning Landscaper Company, who may in turn have commissioned "Pond Specialists"...but whoever built it, used Builders methods of block and waterproof render, we know that this never works for long, as it's a great source of income for us putting them right.

Sadly (for the clients) this only worked until after the first winter when the frost got to it and it leaked, they (the award winning water feature repair company) repaired it which also never works, next winter it split again...clients gave up and here we are...

NORTHERN ENGLAND
At this English Lakeland house, we created a Sunken Formal Garden with a Formal Feature Pool at it's centre.

You can just make out the shape of the circular Formal Pool and the surrounding paths...in spray paint.

The area was just rough sloping lawn, sloping down from left to right, as you can see. We dug out 100's of tons of soil, to create the flat bed for the Sunken Garden, and then dug the pool into it.

Also but not so easy to see, are the earth walls that we created by digging down to be able to create the Sunken Garden. Soon these will have extensive foundations laid in front of them and beautiful, slate walls built to last 100's of years, as will the house.

To get your bearings note the drive with the car on it, and the double lower floor window...

Looking back the same way, it's finished! We designed and created ourselves, with only our own staff.

IF YOU'VE GOT A SMALL GARDEN...don't be put off by the scale of these first projects: we like to say "MAJOR PROJECTS WITH EASE...SMALLER GARDENS WITH PLEASURE"!

"Craftsman" at work, creating detail!

Wanting to design something very special here, we dug into our Chelsea Flower Show-Garden experience, and came up with this, which the clients instantly liked...Formal is mixed with natural, a complicated arrangement of pipes and valves, pump water through the rocks, which gives the impression that the Stag is standing in a rocky stream!

Again none of the liner or pipework is visible.

The basic shape constructed...

In some of our Formal Feature Ponds the water is kept clean using chlorine, as in the "Grandchildrens Splash Pool" and Rill's, here the water is recirculated through hidden pipes that are built into and through the natural stonework, to impressive filters and back again.

Clearly because of the design, the filters are some distance away hidden in the planting.

Some Formal Pools we design to be reflective, this "The Stag Pool" has gentle ripples across the surface, which give you broken reflections.

With a feature such as this, lighting is very important, this lit up at night (we fitted led spots and hid/built them in the stonework, which makes them virtually invisible)...creates beautiful effects.

Most of the features that we create have moving water of some sort, which means that the water can be cleaned through filtration...

Reflections are one of the reasons why clients want a pool of some sort in their gardens.

Here's the feature from earlier. Now this could have a sculpture of some sort at it's centre, such as this...

This we modified so that the water was either recirculated within it's "glass" sphere and steel saucer, thus giving maximum reflections on it's pool's water surface.

Or by remote control you can make it overflow it's saucer causing gentle ripples.

At night the sphere glows from hidden led lights within it's globe!

A feature such as this, a fountain or any work of art is a good way to start off, and add interest to, a Rill or a Formal Pool.

For this client we created Formal by the house and in the distance you can see natural, which we also created!

Here's another one from earlier. The water movement is created by the waterfall pouring out of the natural slate wall, but because we designed it to look like a...

...keyhole, most of the ripples are contained back from the pool itself.

Of course all features that create water movement in a Formal Pool can be turned off whenever, to give an unbroken reflective water surface.

Here we created a stepped Formal Garden with EIGHT feature waterfalls pouring into a long Rill, each one lit at night!

Here's how it looked before...
