It seems to me that "Garden Design" is being pushed in the direction of the very ordinary. Ordinary is being dressed up as "Contemporary"...a sort of horticultural "EMPERORS NEW CLOTHES"! And "Contemporary garden design" is being pushed as a wonderful new style that YOU must all have.
Not that I'm saying all modern gardens are rubbish, I do them...but I'm only interested in doing them if they are, well...interesting! I did the one above and won another big fat, not at all modern, solid gold Royal Horticultural Society GOLD MEDAL! But if you want concrete boxes and plants like you can get from B&Q don't ask me!
Concrete boxes, in other words "Modular Gardens" ARE just rubbish...basically the majority of "Modular" is just ordinary...it's just SO esay to do! And it's being pushed by people who are talentless, all designed by a computer, not by them! You do not need artistic ability to do "Modern/Modular". Add a few measurements to a computer program, press a button and out comes a "Modular Garden"...all concrete boxes and stainless steel...oh and a few plants!
And anyway who wants ordinary in a world that's already being dumbed down to basics! Who wants to come home to a garden that feels like a small version of their office block in Canary Wharf! Gardens are supposed to be about escapism.
My exhibit above is "modern", but hardly boring. Stunning the Judges thought, got a real "WOW FACTOR" the judges thought...so that's how I do "Modern".
But stunning/interesting or not you may hate the modern garden style, MOST people do, so now let me show you some real gardens...

Although just newly planted it's full of interest, form and colour, and next is how the empty looked before...

To get your bearings note the three parking spaces in the barn...
