NORTHERN UK...

IGNORE THE SCALE...IT'S JUST EASIER TO SEE THE DETAIL.
HERE'S HOW WE FINISH THE EDGES NATURALISTICALLY WHATEVER THE SIZE OF THE POND OR STREAM...

We show larger features as it's easier to see the methods that we use to achieve 100% naturalistic effects.

Marginal Aquatic planting beside a large pool...but the same style for small pools and streams.
This pool is lined but no liner is visible. Nor pipes and pumps to spoil the 100% manmade-natural look!

We dig out planting bays and areas by hand as a perfect water level is required for the plants to thrive as they would in the wild.

Too deep and they die. To shallow and they die. The wrong type of plants and they invade and take over!

MIDLANDS...

PEACEFUL NATURALISTIC POOL fed by a gentle babbling brook, which you can see in the following picture.

This is a pool that we created halfway down a "natural" stream. The stream flows in one end and out the other to a large pool at the bottom of the stream, where the pumps return it to the top.

This is a country garden in the Cotswolds, where a stream could naturally be found running through a garden and out the other side. So our stream had to be created to look like it had always been there.

The rocks that you can see top right front the aquatic planting bed, they keep plants from escaping into the pool itself, this method keeps the water flowing and gives the effect of a river or stream bank with bog and aquatic plants growing down to the water...

MIDLANDS...

HERE'S SOME TYPICAL BOG AND AQUATIC PLANTING...

Here the stream that flows into the pool is narrow, but the rock fronted beds stop the plants from completely filling the water course.

MIDLANDS...

WATERSIDE PLANTING ALL WITHIN THE LINER...

All of this is lined and then disguised to look 100% natural.

Planting beds are created to be wet at the front for the aquatics and moist at the back for the bog/moisture plants.
Again this is an art in the building process as too much water and the bog plants die, too little and the aquatics die...here you can see nature has taken over and garden plants are growing amidst the Iris Siberica with yellow flag Iris growing on the wetter otherside.

This by the way is only one year, two summers after planting.
But we do not use "normal" aquatic centre plants. Some of the above were of specimen size.

ALL of our plants are handpicked, by ourselves, the best of 1,000's and come from specialist growers, one of them, like ourselves, show at Chelsea, but they have created 50+ RHS Gold Show Garden Medals, whereas we have ONLY done 20+ Gold Medal winning Show Gardens...so they know how to grow good plants.

NORTHERN UK...Here again is an example of our typical poolside planting...a year earlier this was just a field of weeds...

A WOODLAND POND in SURREY...

Here a REAL natural stream enters from the right of the image and exits below the bridge. To create this effect the stream was widened, creating a semi-shaded peaceful pool...

CHELSEA GOLD MEDAL SHOW GARDEN...Co-designed and built with Marney Hall.

Here instead of a bridge to cross the stream we created a stepping stone path across the water and laid the stones onto a shallow ledge, which again we hand dug, to allow us to plant bog and aquatic plants that will only live in such perfect conditions...

Seven months after planting...
We use specimen rocks to create ledges, then we plant the plants out of their baskets, so that nothing manmade is visible

MARGINAL PLANTING ON A LARGE SCALE...

Again although the scale is large our excavation and planting methods apply whatever the size of the pool or stream...

NEWBURY, BERKSHIRE...

STREAM EXAMPLE ONE...SLOW MOVING, WITH LONG BOWLS...

Here we've created a stream that appears to spring out of the land.
The groups of aquatic plants to the left and the right are in planting beds, which are built within the stream liner.

This is newly planted, soon it will look like the next image...

MIDLANDS...

Tranquil Wildlife pond with a few fish!

STREAM EXAMPLE TWO, GENTLE MOVEMENT, LINER 100% DISGUISED FOR MAXIMUM NATURAL EFFECT...

Some streams we create with different areas to add interest.
Part of a stream can run through grass, then change to cobbles, gravel and plants, such as this. Then to fast flowing and narrow. Then to wider and slower flowing. We add weirs for subtle changes of level. We add waterfalls for larger drops. And probably most importantly, given the space, we create a stream that wanders, as in nature, and not ditch like in a straight line.

Short "garden" streams are usually rock and cobbles, such as the examples in Part Two next...
