WATERFEATURES...WHAT'S NEW...

MEDIUM to LARGE PROJECTS. RENOVATE - RELINE - REPAIR - REPLANT- TRANSFORM. NATURAL & FORMAL. Also ugly, unplantable holes in the ground full of water transformed and beautified...

Part One of Ten...Large Ponds and Small Lakes, New Ponds and Small Lakes that we've Designed, Lined, Built and Planted over the past TWENTY+ years...

Yes this really WAS a pond!

HERE we have the challenge of remaking a badly thought-out and constructed large pond in Essex and to get your bearing note the telegraph poles and the mound in the distance...

Ignore the visible liner, its still being filled up!

So we got our (we rarely use sub-contractors) diggers in, cleaned it all out, and this is what we ended up with after lining it.

The banks have been re-designed and re-dug to allow for our specialist aquatic and bog planting. The final level will be just below the bridge.
That gives us very wet conditions for the aquatic plants and varying levels of moisture for the bog plants ...

So what went wrong...it was dug out in the hope that it would hold water without a liner. With our experience instead of wishful thinking it was obvious to us that it would never hold water.

So what happens is that the water slowly seeps away, and then of course it's too late to fix, then nature takes over...also it was planted with invasive plants, as the water goes down, it allows them to spread even more, so they creep into the middle and eventually take over.

But not all conditions are suitable for lining a large pond or a small lake, with a membrane liner...without building in certain precautions, which we are well experienced with.

We have several options that we use that take all of the conditions into account, which we discuss with you during the site visit.

ONCE JUST A FIELD...Here is the effect that we can achieve by digging out a pond correctly. Correctly means, dug out in such a way that the plants will thrive in their own areas, and not escape, or WORSE, die...which is to do with the depth of water and the type of plants that we use.

Next the process, we start with a field in Scotland.

And yes we travel the country to build specialist gardens and ponds such as this one from various bases, but if you live nowhere near, we travel, and our staff happily stay away (but of course only if the project is large or special enough for the clients to warrant employing us) without any cost to yourselves.

So, next is that field...

We dig a "natural" hole...that's a hole that when it's a finished pond or lake, it will look like it's ALWAYS been there...bluntly put, not "a hole in the ground pond" that looks like a water board reservoir that's impossible to plant

Basically, we have the experience to know what it's going to look like before we start to dig. Which is very important when you have to dig a very big hole, because what you dig and how you dig the various planting levels, is what you are stuck with. And we see this so many times, a hole/pond that is impossible to "naturalise"

So using our experience, we visually take all of the different land levels into consideration. And we choose a point to base everything on...then we blend the existing levels of the land around into the perfect level of the water...

Newly planted...

We do everything in house. We design it, we build it using our own staff, and we plant it!
Which saves you costs and possible confusion, arguments and disputes between the Garden Designer and the Landscapers.

We create what we design, our Company has more Royal Horticultural Society awards than any other Designers/Landscapers. To win the RHS Gold Award, everything HAS to be perfect. We have designed and built numerous such gardens, including THREE THAT HAVE WON GOLD and BEST IN SHOW, now let us create one for you too!

And our prices are competitive with other high level Designers/ Landscapers

We would love to work for you...call one of our Designers on our "Designers Direct Line" for a friendly, informal chat on...07970 309 165 7 days 8am to 8pm or Office Hours 0800 91 98 33

One year later...

One year earlier...even as a hole in the ground you can see the variations in slopes and depths that will create the natural variations that you would find in the real natural water world!

A liner this sizes weighs tons! Here it's being supported by a 17 ton machine...

Then it's very slow manual process as there is only so much that the machine can do...this is very "old fashioned" heavy butyl rubber, but nowadays we, while we still use butyl for some types of projects, use a more modern type of liner which uses new technology to make it lighter, and even better these modern versions are guaranteed for FORTYFIVE YEARS...whereas the butyl types are only guaranteed for 20 years or less!

Then to finish we built a little stone summer house, using reclaimed stone and timber we found in the forest.

We built a stone chimney and fitted a log burner.

We membraned the roof and planted a "living roof" of local woodland fern and turf we cut from the field!

The liner was disguised with gravel, stone and plants to give 100% natural look, and doesnt it look just that...

The next challenge is to "naturalize" this, that the clients own men created!
